About Illegal Immigration

I am extremely concerned about the illegal immigrant situation, because I am myself an immigrant, a legal one, and have been a citizen for more almost 50 years. I am extremely angered by the recent failure of the U.S. Government to control illegal immigration, thus debasing the value of citizenship for which all of us fought so hard.

On my widely read web-site I have posted my opinion on the subject and also a survey form to allow readers to post their opinions. You may see this at:

I believe that the two most serious problems with immigration policy, other than the poor control of our borders, are:

1. Failure to control temporary visitors, thus allowing aliens who entered the country legally to stay on forever. The fact that driving licenses are given to aliens without any control and that illegal aliens using hospital emergency rooms (at taxpayers' expense) are not deported after treatment, are two of the most striking examples. Plus major companies are being allowed to employ illegals without any restraint or serious penalties.

2. Use of Spanish on official documents and allowing Spanish to be used as an official teaching language in schools. None of the millions of legal Polish, Hungarian, Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese immigrants have been given these privileges! I believe that a majority of U.S. citizens of Hispanic descent is also opposed to the use of Spanish for teaching in schools, because they believe that this retards the education and assimilation of Hispanics.

Finally, I believe that there is a need for Temporary Workers Visas (provided that all other controls are strictly enforced). The present 66,000 annual allotment of Temporary Visas for agricultural and construction workers is ridiculous. There is a need for at least 500,000 a year - a need being presently filled with illegals. Regrettably, many unemployed young Americans are unwilling to perform these low paying jobs, which also require hard work. My gardener, a legal immigrant from Jamaica, has built up his business over the years and employs Hispanics exclusively. I have queried him on the subject. He has told me that originally he employed local blacks and white kids looking for summer jobs. However, they were so unreliable - failing to come to work on time or quitting without warning - that he was forced to change his policy.

The President of Mexico can complain as much as he wants. Mexican immigration policy is as tough as any in the world. It is virtually impossible for any foreign born to obtain Mexican citizenship! A friend of mine, born in Mexico, has told me that his father, a British engineer married to a Mexican woman, was never able to obtain citizenship, although he lived in that country for over 50 years, until his death.
